Hardwood floors look beautiful, but it’s no secret that they are difficult to keep clean. We installed some really cheap IKEA laminate wood flooring in our old house. The floor is very durable and not particularly glossy, so it never looked dirty.
When Abby and I chose flooring for our new home, we considered many hardwood and laminate options. I mostly went the laminate or engineered floor route because flooring has a lower gloss and tends to hide stains better.
But in the end I chose real wood for the flooring. I like the look and the color, but the finish is very glossy and tends to show dirt and stains. Keeping it clean has never been easier.




I knew I needed a really easy way to keep my floors clean, day after day, week after week. Bringing out the mop and bucket every week didn’t seem likely.
After talking to some people and looking online, here’s the process I came up with. All in all, it works very well and is easy to maintain.

For visible crumbs, hair, or dirt, cordless sweeper Spot clean floors daily or as needed. Cordless vacuums aren’t the most powerful vacuums, but they make up for in their lightness and ease of use. We keep our batteries charged all the time, and when we notice a lot of visible dirt or crumbs, we pull our little sweeper out of the closet.
The way the cordless sweeper is designed makes it super lightweight and super agile. You can easily place it next to your kitchen cabinets or kitchen island. It’s also easy to tuck under the front of your refrigerator or other appliance.
Again, the rotating brush doesn’t pick up everything, but it works pretty well.
- It is best to sweep or vacuum the floor regularly. Any remaining debris (dirt, sand, etc.) will make scratches more noticeable over time. This can occur on hardwood laminate flooring regardless of grade.
- Add rugs to protect high-traffic areas from abrasion.
- Wipe up spills as soon as possible and avoid pooling liquids (this includes cleaning solutions and plain water).
- If you have pets in your home, keep their nails trimmed to protect your hardwood floors.
