We’ve been making homemade pizza for years, but recently started making our own pizza sauce. It seemed like the dough and toppings were the star, the sauce was the side note, and it wasn’t worth the effort.
I was wrong.
After finding no commercial sauces in the cupboard, I looked for homemade pizza sauce. After a few tweaks, I came up with a sauce that’s rich, flavorful, easy to make, and uses whatever food you have in your pantry. Ingredients for homemade pizza sauce:
- crushed tomato– Crushed tomatoes give pizza sauce the perfect texture.
- tomato paste– Tomato paste helps thicken the sauce.
- Olive oil– Adding olive oil adds a smooth texture and flavor.
- garlic– Fresh garlic is an essential ingredient. Now measure with your heart!
- sugar– Sugar helps balance the acidity of tomatoes.
- Italian seasoning– I found the Italian dry seasoning to give the best flavor.
- onion powder– I used onion powder because I didn’t want chunks of onion in the sauce.
- salt and pepper– Season it. I used sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.




How to make homemade pizza sauce:
