A few years ago we finally built the outdoor counter space of our dreams, complete with a built-in gas grill and spot for a green egg type ceramic grill/smoker. It’s really hard to pony up almost $900 for a grill we certainly enjoy but not use every day or week. So last month my 41st birthday Wanted some smoked ribs to celebrate the day, and my husband Jason finally said let’s fill that empty spot for your gift.

Buy a used ‘egg’ ceramic grill

Like any big purchase, Jason started with good old research. Green Egg is a popular oven-style ceramic charcoal barbecue. He’s the biggest name in cookers, but he’s learned that there are many other brands available today that (arguably) offer comparable quality. rice field. Ceramic grills are very efficient at retaining heat for a long time and with a surprisingly small amount of lump charcoal he can stay as low as 225°F or as hot as 750°F+. Whether smoking, baking or grilling, these grills do it all and give great flavor.

We quickly decided black was the best color for us, and Jason found a used Primo brand ceramic egg grill on Craigslist for just $250.not bad something new On sale for 950 yen!

type? !

I have to say I was skeptical when he returned with a used grill. Mold had grown inside, and the firebox (where the coal was placed) was split in two. However, the egg grill can get moldy if you don’t use it for a long time, and at 600 degrees he found that just heating it for 15 minutes can cause it to get moldy. He easily We cleaned it with our pressure washer (using a wide fan spray), let it dry, then a raging fire killed it. And my husband has learned that if you clean the grill after each use and leave the vents and chimney lid open when not in use, mold is no longer an issue.

firebox crack

Cracked fireboxes are apparently very common due to expansion and contraction during a very hot fire. It doesn’t matter. They explained that you can leave the two halves joined together like puzzle pieces (the grill works equally well either way), or if it bothers you will send you a replacement product free of charge.

other small fixes

of grill thermometer was also not working and was another item that had to be replaced (for a nominal fee) as exact thing is important. again, gasket If it gets worn between the top and bottom pieces of the grill, you can easily replace it yourself. Luckily this had just been done on the grill I purchased.

grill accessories

I quickly discovered that there are many accessories for egg style grills.I wanted to keep the total cost down and buy only what I needed For real Needed, Jason did some more research and settled on these essentials.

  1. cooking grate system$55 – This is a very versatile system that doubles the cooking area when used with the heat deflector underneath, allowing you to cook in different temperature zones (such as cooking vegetables and meat at the same time). This combo is significantly cheaper than Kamado Joe’s “divide and conquer” system at $200.

  2. heat deflector$55 – Two half-moon deflectors can be used with the above system for second-hand smoke or pizza cooking.
  3. ash tools When bucket – Simply remove the ash and store it in a bucket until you are sure the ash is completely out and can be safely disposed of.
  4. mesh vent cover –Some grills have a screen over the air intake, but ours did not. I added a piece.. I had to bend the metal slot a bit to get it to fit, but it worked great.

Finally (with a little work!), I’m happy to share that I got my dream barbecue stove for a fraction of the price. Let’s… this is the recipe my husband came up with after some experimentation. They were so delicious and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate. 🙂
