I converted my study into a formal dining space for special occasions, but I use it primarily as a home office. literally, every day. We wanted to optimize the use of this office space by adding pocket doors for much-needed privacy and noise isolation. It adds some built-in shelves and cabinets to provide much-needed storage. To make all this possible, we’ve narrowed the opening from 96 inches to 60 inches to provide more wall space for built-ins and better dimensions for pocket doors. Here’s a little sketch to give you an idea of what we’re heading towards. (I always get a lot of questions about how he draws. I drew this with his Notability on the iPad!)

I was determined to find a vintage wooden French door to use, but you may have seen on Instagram that I went “vintage door shopping” at the junkyard, but no such luck. There was no. They had thousands of beautiful doors, but we were looking for a wooden door that was 30 inches wide and about 96 inches high. They can be a few inches taller, but you can’t make the headers too big unless you remove the crown molding.

I scoured several locations online and in stores before deciding “You think too much!” Sure, when the girls are at home, sometimes the pocket door is closed for meetings and phone calls, but not so much. That’s when we decided it made a lot more sense to match these pocket doors to the existing interior or pantry doors in our home.

yes! Pantry door!! It will work! I like the idea of having a window in the door even when the door is closed. I knew I wanted something unique for my pocket door, but I think it actually makes more sense to repeat elements of the house.

Above, you can see the mural hanging between the doorway and the built-in. good luck We were able to save that part of the mural. I’ll put it back once the built-in is built in.

We are working with local craftsmen to make the cabinets and they will be painted the same color as the rest of the trim in the room. It may be time. yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
