How To Organise Your Room – 9 Easy Steps That Really Work!

by Contributing Author

Organizing a space can be a daunting task, so here are the exact steps you need to take to keep your room organized to perfection every time. Learn exactly how to organize your room to help you in your daily life.

Sometimes I look around the rooms in my house and sigh…

It’s gotten out of hand, seems confusing, doesn’t work for you anymore – and, well, needs to be completely sorted out.

But where should I start?

I’ve organized many rooms over the years for myself and my clients, but I’ve boiled down the whole process into simple steps that can be accomplished in the time available (rather than doing it all at once). is also much easier).

In fact, this method is trademarked and I call it the “ADORE method”.

What is the ADORE method?

  • A is for evaluation – Planning and starting work will help you get things right the first time and prevent costly mistakes)
  • D is Declutter – Once you know what you need that space for, you can get rid of what you don’t need.
  • O is for organizing – After sorting out the unnecessary – you can work on what is left. The organizing phase is all about creating the right storage, systems, and solutions for the project you’re working on.
  • R is real life – Now it’s time to live in your new space! Give it a good amount of time to see if it works as expected.
  • E is for evaluation – If all goes well, you can just sit back and enjoy the space. If not, go back to the beginning of the process.
The ADORE Method Cycle to organize everything in your home and life

At any given time, every space in your home is on one of these steps. As the photo above shows, it’s a cyclical method, not a task with an end.

But don’t worry. That’s not to say you’re going to work on it forever. It just means that you need to recognize the fact that life happens and things change.

Quote - Organizing is a Journey, Not a Destination

Now you have seen the overall process. It’s time to organize your room step by step…

How to organize a room – a step-by-step guide

In this step-by-step guide, we’ll look at a bedroom example. That way you can visualize the steps more easily…

Step 1 – Tidy Up

Before you decide anything in a room, you need to be able to see it properly.

Surface-level clutter doesn’t help you make the right decisions. So you want your room to be as tidy as possible so you can actually see what you’re working on.

Take some time to put things where you currently live and put things in order.

Bedroom example: Make your bed, put things in drawers and cupboards, and hang clothes around you.

Step 2 – Decide What You Need for the Room

As you start sorting things out, you may end up with a room that still doesn’t work.

why?

Because you haven’t evaluated your space to see what you really need and want.

So before you do anything, take some time to think about:

  • What is the main point of this space? (bedroom, study, living room, etc…).
  • Is this room suitable for that function?
  • who will use the room?
  • What activities take place in it?
  • What is working in the room for you now?
  • Do you ever get frustrated about space?
  • What do you need in your room to meet all your needs?
  • Is there anything in that space that shouldn’t really be there?

By the end of this brainstorming, you should have a better understanding of what needs to be changed and what can be left alone.

bedroom example: This is the master bedroom. Yes, the room is suitable for this purpose. Common items should be stored, including clothing, toiletries, and decorations. I struggle with space to store my clothes, with nowhere to easily put my makeup on each morning. There are things in the room that you don’t need anymore, like a job or an ironing board. We want our space to be a relaxing haven that helps us get a better night’s sleep.

Step 3 – Organize your room

Now that you know what you need in your space, you can organize everything you don’t need.

Remember, clutter isn’t just the obvious trash in your room.

Your main task here is to clear the room of all unnecessary things so that only the necessary things are left.

Bedroom example: Go through your clothes and put away what you don’t really wear or need. This frees up much-needed storage space. Completely remove the work items and ironing board that lived there. Also, this is a time to curate the other items in the room and keep only those items that you feel will help you relax and calm down.

Step 4 – Clean Everything

Now is the time to clean everywhere. Because I have less space to deal with.

Take some time to wipe down all surfaces so that you’re ready to organize what’s left over without dealing with dust and dirt at the same time.

Step 5 – Create storage that suits you

Now comes the fun part!

This is the first step most people take, but as you can see it takes a lot of work to get here.

why?

I’m more confident that what I’m organizing is appropriate for the space and no more clutter.

It also gave me more confidence in how I wanted the room to work.

Look around each part of the room and decide where things should be placed, how they should be stored, and how they would like to be stored.

bedroom example:

  • your wardrobe: Now that you have only the clothes you know you want to store, you know you have enough space to hang all your clothes (except fitness clothes, underwear, and out-of-season clothes). So you know how many hangers you need. matches if this is important to you. You can also have a few extra hangers as spares, so you won’t have any problems if they break or you wear new clothes…
  • your bed: I’ve noticed that with more storage, it becomes much easier to manage the room. A storage bed is the perfect solution. It provides hidden space for storing out-of-season clothes.
  • your makeup area: I put the extras under the bed to free up space, so you can get a simple console table under the window (for natural light) where you can keep your mirror and cosmetics.

Step 6 – Live in your new space

Another place where most people stop organizing is now. Because it’s all over, right?

error!

Yes you sorted things out. But I’m still not sure if I organized them the right way.

You might think you know, but the only way to really know it is to accept for a while how you’ve been arranging things. And to realize that this is a testing time for awareness of what is what. It’s working.

live in the new space for at least a few weeks – so you get a really good idea of how the room will perform in the long run.

During this time, be mindful of the daily routines your room supports, what you need to hand over and what you don’t have.

And most importantly, be open to things that need tweaking as needed.

Step 7 – Tweak!

After living in that room for a while, you’ll know if something needs to change.

If everything in the room is working fine, you can move on to the final step.

If part of the room isn’t working, go back to step 5 and repeat until everything works the way you want it to.

Bedroom example: Clothes storage works great, except for the under-bed storage for out-of-season clothes. We want to have more space for this and free up more space under the bed. I decided to use vacuum storage bags to minimize the space required. Now I want to work on this idea.

Step 8 – Room Maintenance

This worked fine and I am now in maintenance mode. Stay in this state until something changes (see step 9).

Now is the time to keep things as they are.

Don’t make a mess, clean regularly, and tidy up every day.

The great thing is that once you enter this step, your daily life becomes much easier.

Step 9 – Know When Circumstances Change…

life happens.

Whether it’s a change in your life (new home, kids growing up, etc.), a lifestyle change (working from home, etc.), or you just haven’t maintained your space properly, at some point your room needs updating. There may be..

If something happens that means your space is no longer working well, it’s time to go back to the beginning and re-evaluate everything.

Sometimes it just needs a small change, sometimes it needs a complete overhaul. Returning to step 1 will help you determine the correct next steps.
