Ingredients for homemade pasta sauce

  • Olive oil – Adds flavor and texture, bringing out the flavors of onion, garlic and celery to sauces.
  • butter – Adds a super creamy buttery flavor. Trust me – you’ll want to add it.
  • onion – Chop finely – don’t worry about pieces as they will be blended at the end – it’s for flavor.
  • garlic – A key ingredient in this flavorful sauce. You can use minced or chop it yourself.
  • celery – Adds a refreshing flavor. Optional, but I love this sauce.
  • herbs – You will need dried oregano and fresh basil. If you don’t have fresh, you can use dry, but fresh is much better in my opinion.
  • mashed tomato – A 28-ounce can of good old mashed tomatoes.

How to make pasta sauce at home (20 minutes or less)

Of course, you can simmer this sauce as long as you like, but in my experience, even the short simmering times are really delicious, making this pasta sauce more approachable than many other recipes.

  1. In a large sauté pan, heat olive oil and butter over high heat. Add the chopped onion and celery and sauté until softened and golden brown.
  2. Add the garlic and stir constantly for an additional 2 minutes to prevent the garlic from burning.
  3. Reduce heat to medium and add dried oregano, salt, pepper, and sugar. Stir and cook for 1 more minute.
  4. Add the mashed tomatoes and deglaze the pan by scraping the bottom well. Add water and mix to combine. This is where the sauce starts to thicken, so add another 1/4 cup of water if it’s too thick.
  5. Reduce heat and add fresh basil leaves. Simmer the mixture for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Simmering as long as you like will thicken the sauce and add flavor. Enjoy over pasta!

Tips and Suggestions:

Add meat. Transform this simple pasta sauce into a hearty meat sauce by adding a pound of turkey, beef, or sausage along with onions and celery.

Use fresh tomatoes. I love using fresh garden tomatoes instead of canned tomatoes when they are in season. I love roma tomatoes. To do this, place fresh tomatoes in a pot of boiling water until the skin begins to peel off.put them in food processor Pulse until desired consistency is reached.

Add flavor boosters. A simple and delicious pasta sauce recipe. Add some grated parmesan cheese, mix in butter or a little heavy cream, add a teaspoon of sugar, and dry herbs such as basil, thyme, parsley, crushed red pepper flakes, or Italian seasonings. can be added and mixed. Blend it in or top it with a drizzle of really good olive oil.

For very smooth pasta sauces: After the homemade pasta sauce is cooked, immersion blender reach the desired consistency. You can also use a blender (let the sauce cool slightly first), but it’s easier to avoid over-blending with an immersion blender. I personally like thicker sauces, but if I use it as a pizza or as a dip, I like to make it a little finer.

Store leftovers in the freezer. This recipe is super easy, but if I’m making a batch, I like to double or triple it for future meals! Place leftover sauce in a ziplock freezer bag, flatten and freeze. . Up to 6 months is fine. In the refrigerator, the sauce will stay fresh for up to 4 days.

Please let me know how to serve the homemade pasta sauce. Of course it’s delicious with pasta, but that’s not all! This sauce can be dipped into Veg-His Twist and used on homemade pizzas and Week Night Gnocchi, or used in simple dishes like Baked His Ziti.

What side dish goes well with pasta? Pasta night’s go-to side dishes include baked asparagus, easy artisan bread, a simple salad with citrus dressing, cheesy broccoli bites, and cauliflower breadsticks.
