Dark Navy Living Room Makeover with a Fire Place Built In

by Contributing Author

When I started talking to clients at Gather House, one of the things we talked about was making the space look fresh and new. These clients are also friends of ours and she is one of our favorite couples, so it was a great pleasure to help them. We were updating several rooms in their home. The main family/living room was one of them.My client was ready for a big change and we had many requests. and needs, and how to make changes they were happy with. (Because I wanted a distinctive wall). Then they already had free-standing cabinets and liked the look of them, so the conversation turned to building some sort of matching low bookshelf or cabinet on either side of the fireplace. I stared at the idea of creating white painted boards and battens on the back wall, transforming it into a dark navy living room with a built-in fireplace.

I made a few mockups for them and over time we slowly talked about running the builtins and then modifying the fireplace. We have a great contractor working on it, and they’ve actually figured out how to do amazing built-ins all the way through. One of the goals was to keep the original brick in the fireplace.

I thought it would be so amazing to see the whole space transform into a very dark saturated color. It’s easy to work with. We knew the contrast with the bright drapes would be very striking. I’m so glad they decided to take the risk. The homeowner told us one of her favorite colors was blue, so we knew we needed to go in that direction.I boldly painted the wall beautifully westcott navy By Benjamin Moore.

Can you believe this is the same room? One of our other conversations was about flooring as we already have stone floors in the kitchen area and both rooms are connected and we like the feel of carpet.

We decided to replace it with a low pile, comfortable, neutral carpet and cover it with an area rug in the main sitting area to bring in texture and color. And I’m so glad they decided to take the risk and use really dark colors.

The whole room came together really organically. Flipping the leather section to the other side of the room made it flow better. The homeowner has a really nice eye herself and is so fun and easy to work with. We share the Gather House dining room and the super fun wallpaper and added sculpting she chose!
